Cambrian Shield set to battle for medal on home court at OCAA men’s volleyball championships – February 26

SUDBURY – The Cambrian Shield men’s volleyball team will compete for an Ontario medal on home court this weekend as Cambrian College hosts the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Championships.
Cambrian advanced to the semi-finals following a decisive 3–1 victory over the Loyalist College Lancers this past weekend. The Shield enter championship play after finishing atop the OCAA West Division with an impressive 13–3 regular season record.
This marks Cambrian’s fourth consecutive trip to the OCAA medal round. – a testament to the program’s sustained excellence and competitive depth.
“Being able to host the provincial championships is such an honour, and an opportunity earned through the hard work and dedication by the student-athletes, coaching staff and athletics department here at Cambrian,” says Tim Yu, Cambrian’s Manager of Athletics. “Now we get to share this reward with our friends and family and community that have supported us through this journey.”
The Shield will face the Humber College Hawks Friday night at 5:30 p.m. in the Cambrian gym.
The matchup is a rematch of last year’s championship final, where Humber captured gold and Cambrian earned silver. In the two previous seasons, the Shield earned bronze medals.
The tournament’s other semi-final will see the Seneca College Sting take on the Fanshawe College Falcons.
Championship Saturday begins with the bronze medal match at 1 p.m., followed by the gold medal match at 3 p.m., both hosted in the Cambrian gym.
Cambrian enters the medal round with one of the most decorated rosters in the province.
Liam Hansen of Perth finished the regular season as the OCAA overall and West Division scoring champion and was named a West Division First Team All-Star.
Sam George of Sudbury earned national recognition as a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Canadian and was also selected as an OCAA West Division First Team All-Star.
Sudbury’s Jason Diotte was chosen as a West Division First Team All-Star, while fellow Sudbury athlete Cale Bast earned West Division Second Team All-Star honours.
Ethan Wheatley of Onaping Falls was named to the OCAA West Division All-Rookie Team.
The public is invited to come out and cheer on the Cambrian Shield at this weekend’s championships.
