SUDBURY – Two of the most decorated athletes in Cambrian College’s history are on in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Hall of Fame.
Brad Boudreau and Melanie Finlay were inducted into the Hall of Fame at a ceremony earlier this month in Toronto.
“This is a tremendous honour for both Brad and Melanie, who were stellar athletes during their time at Cambrian,” says Tim Yu, Cambrian’s Manager of Athletics. “They were also fantastic students and role models, and true ambassadors for Cambrian. This is such an amazing moment for them and our varsity athletics program, which has produced so many champions over the years.”
Brad Boudreau, who grew up in the Greater Sudbury community of Azilda and now lives in Ottawa, was a star for Cambrian’s men’s volleyball team from 1989 to 1992. During that time, he was twice named Cambrian’s Male Athlete of the Year (1990-91, 1991-1992), earned four medals at the OCAA championships, named an OCAA All-Star on three occasions, and earned five OCAA MVP awards.
“It’s an incredible honor to be inducted into the OCAA Hall of Fame as a proud Cambrian College alumnus,” says Brad Boudreau. “My time at Cambrian, the strong bond we shared as a team, and the way we played together are among my fondest memories. I’m truly grateful for those moments and the lifelong friendships formed through sport.”
Melanie Finley, who grew up in Kapuskasing and now lives in Pickering, was a dominant force in women’s singles and doubles badminton between 1998 and 2001. Her achievements include two-time winner of Cambrian’s Female Athlete of the Year (1998-99, 1999-2000), co-winner of the 1999-2000 OCAA Female Athlete of the year, four medals at the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association championships (1998-2001), three OCAA women’s doubles championships, three OCAA team championships, and an OCAA singles silver medal.
“It’s a great honour to be place among the legends of badminton,” says Finley. “I have many fond memories of my time spent at Cambrian. Working together and growing as a team helped shape me into the person I am today. I am so grateful for the time, dedication and commitment Cambrian’s coach, faculty and players put into the sport that made it so successful. Team is everything!”
Cambrian College competes in varsity sports in men’s and women’s badminton, cross-country running, soccer, and volleyball.
This past season, the men’s volleyball team won the silver medal at the OCAA championships, following back-to-back bronze medals in the previous two seasons.
