SUDBURY – It was the best year ever at Skills Ontario for Team/Équipe Sudbury – Powered by Manitoulin Transport.
Skills Ontario was held this week in Toronto. It is Canada’s largest skilled trades competition. Each year, more than 2,400 elementary, secondary, and post-secondary students vie for medals in dozens of categories.
This year, members of Team/Équipe Sudbury won 16 medals: 3 gold, 6 silver, and 7 bronze. A team member also won the Award of Excellence for the top-ranking competitor representing a college.
The full team included 160 students and teachers from Cambrian College, Collège BoréaI, Rainbow District School Board, Sudbury Catholic District School Board, Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon, and Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord.
“What an incredible year for Team/Équipe Sudbury, as this is the most medals we have ever won at a single Skills Ontario competition,” says Renee Scott, Cambrian’s Director of Marketing, Recruitment and Student Success and the chief organizer of Team/Équipe Sudbury. “It really speaks to the skill and dedication of our students and their teachers who prepared them so well for this year’s event. It shows that students in Sudbury can compete with the best in the province.”
Last year, Team/Equipe Sudbury earned seven medals including two gold, two silver, and three bronze.
Cambrian students have been competing at Skills Ontario since 2005. Including this year’s winners, Cambrian has won a total of 77 medals: 27 gold, 22 silver, and 28 bronze.
