Cambrian wins silver at OCAA championships

SUDBURY – For the third year in a row, the Cambrian Shield men’s volleyball team has won a medal at the provincial championships.

This past weekend, Cambrian hosted the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) men’s volleyball championships.

Cambrian earned the silver medal, losing a competitive game to the four-time defending champion Humber Hawks. It is the first silver medal for Cambrian men’s volleyball team since 1995.

The Shield entered the championships as the two-time defending bronze medalist.

“This medal means so much to our team, because we earned it on our home court, in front of our hometown fans,” says Dale Beausoleil, head coach of the Cambrian Shield, who was also named this year’s OCAA Coach of the Year. “The team played two amazing games in this final four tournament this weekend, and solidified Cambrian’s place as one of the elite volleyball programs in Ontario. What a great finish this year for both our men’s and women’s team, which also reached the quarterfinals against a very tough field. I am extremely proud of my team and coaching staff. Our men’s team had an extremely successful second half of the season, going undefeated until the final.  A big thanks to Cambrian’s Athletics Manager Tim Yu for putting on a great final four tournament. The atmosphere in the gym was electrifying to play in and I would like to thank all the fans for making the final a memory that the team and I will never forget!”

“Making it into the final for the first time in 30 years was quite an accomplishment and it meant that much more because we did it on home court,” adds Tim Yu. “All the hard work the team put in this year reached its peak inside our gym this championship weekend and the energy level from the fans that was second to none.  We are proud of the team and so honoured to see them win the silver medal.”

Varsity athletics at Cambrian College include volleyball, soccer, badminton, and cross-country running.
