SUDBURY – When the heat is on, Tyson Lalonde of Mattawa is a pretty cool customer.
Lalonde placed second at a provincial competition for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) technician students.
The competition was part of the annual Canadian Mechanical and Plumbing Exposition (CMPX), held March 20-22 in Toronto.
The competition consisted of running gas piping, installing a venting system, and hooking up a modern furnace. There was also an interview component where competitors spoke about their passion for the HVAC trade.
“This trip was a once-in-a-lifetime college experience,” says Lalonde. “My second-year professor, Steve McGrath, did an awesome job this past year getting me ready as a competitor, and having Shaun Bryanton as support throughout the competition was key. Thanks Cambrian team for all your support.”
Lalonde was one of four students from Cambrian competing in the event. They were coached by HVAC faculty member Shaun Bryanton.
“This experience wouldn’t have been possible without the support from Darrell Clarke, Renee Scott, and the rest of skilled trades management team, who encouraged me from day one,” adds Bryanton. “The students with Team Cambrian impressed me with their knowledge, attitudes, and professionalism that was on full display throughout the competition.”
