Expanded Team Sudbury to Compete at 2024 Skills Ontario

SUDBURY – “You’re going to need a bigger bus.”

In the years to come, there will be more people wearing Team Sudbury jerseys at the annual Skills Ontario competition in Toronto, and they will be speaking in both official languages.

Team/Équipe Sudbury announced today that it is expanding to include students, teachers and staff from Collège BoréaI, Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon and Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord. They will join students from Cambrian College, Rainbow District School Board and Sudbury Catholic District School Board to compete at Skills Ontario.

Manitoulin Transport has also joined Team/Équipe Sudbury this year, signing on as the main sponsor for the next ten years.

“The Greater Sudbury region is renowned for its innovation in the skilled trades, and we are eager to join forces so that the collective expertise of our institutions shines through their know-how and comprehensiveness,” says Daniel Giroux, President of Collège Boréal.

One of the students who took part in a local Skills Ontario qualifier this year was Isabelle Boudreault, a grade 12 student at École secondaire catholique Champlain in Chelmsford. She placed third in the welding category.

“I take great pride in representing girls my age and want to encourage them to persevere and not be afraid to try a skilled trade,” says Boudreault. “I have always been a very persistent person and I intend to apply the skills that I have learned in new contexts. I always give 100 per cent and I will do the same during the upcoming qualifications.”

Last year’s version of Team Sudbury had its best year to date at Skills Ontario. Students earned a total of nine medals: one gold, one silver, and seven bronze. Since 2018, Team Sudbury has won 31 medals (7 gold, 8 silver, 16 bronze).

“Last year was amazing for Team Sudbury at Skills Ontario and with the addition of our French-language partners, Team/Équipe Sudbury – Powered by Manitoulin Transport will be a force to be reckoned with,” says Kristine Morrissey, President of Cambrian College.

“We are excited to send a proud contingent of students from Rainbow Schools to the provincial tech skills competition,” says Bruce Bourget, Director of Education for Rainbow District School Board. “The trades offer exceptional opportunities for students. We congratulate all participants as they showcase their skills among the best in Ontario.”

The 2024 2024 Skills Ontario Competition takes place May 6-7 at the Toronto Congress Centre with more than 2,400 students competing in 70 different events.
