SUDBURY – Every year, Team Sudbury travels to Toronto to compete in Skills Ontario. The journey to this year’s competition will begin February 28 in Sudbury when Cambrian College and Rainbow District School Board host the local skills event at Cambrian’s main campus.
More than 300 elementary and secondary students from Rainbow Schools will compete in over 20 categories, covering everything from animation to welding.
“In the spirit of innovation and collaboration, Cambrian College and the Rainbow District School Board proudly embark on our sixth year of partnership for local skills competition that not only cultivates community but also nurtures mentorship and competition readiness for Skills Ontario,” says Alison Caruso, Cambrian’s manager of student recruitment. “Together, we forge pathways to a stronger future, where dedication and determination pave the way for success.”
The winners of each event in the local skills competition will join Team Sudbury, which will compete at Skills Ontario May 6-8 in Toronto. Team Sudbury is comprised of students from Cambrian College and College Boréal, as well as students from the four local school boards.
“Cambrian College has been a valued partner with Rainbow District School Board for many years supporting us locally for the Ontario Skills Competition,” says Jennifer Burns, cooperative education coordinator and Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program recruiter for the Rainbow District School Board. “This year we are expanding secondary events and bringing back five events for our Grade 7 and 8 students. This partnership has enabled us to provide this opportunity to more than 300 students who are exploring and excelling in technology and trades. Through Cambrian, our students have access to state-of-the-art facilities to practice and compete. We look forward to continuing to work with Cambrian for years to come.”
The Skills Ontario competition offers a unique opportunity for students to demonstrate that they are the best in their respective fields. Winners are awarded gold, silver, or bronze medals. Some also receive monetary awards. Students who capture top honours provincially get to compete nationally. A further win at Skills Canada could lead to the World Skills Competition.
