Overview

Need off-campus housing?

Looking to live off-campus? There are several community-based resources you can access to find off-campus accommodations in Greater Sudbury. Whether you need to find new accommodation or need assistance with your current accommodation, there are resources to assist you.

Cambrian College is an official partner institution of Places4Students, an off-campus housing service helping students find a home away from home.

Your tenant rights

Under the Ontario government, you have rights and responsibilities as a tenant. So does your landlord. The Residential Tenancies Act, 2006, outlines your rights, responsibilities, lease agreements and more relating to your rental agreement. Read about the laws that affect residential tenants and landlords in Ontario to stay informed.

You can also access the information provided by Community Legal Education Ontario. You can find community resources containing general legal information for people in Ontario, including resources on rentals and landlord regulations. This is not for specific legal problems.

If you require specific legal advice, Cambrian Student Council has retained the Law Office of Nathan A. Bolvin to educate you on your rights and responsibilities as tenants and to assist you if you are experiencing conflicts with your landlord. To use this service, you must contact the Cambrian Student Council at cscpresident@cambriancollege.ca

City of Greater Sudbury housing by-laws

All landlords and homeowners have to follow all existing local government bylaws when it comes to their property. These by-laws regulate how many people are allowed to live in a dwelling, proper care and maintenance of the property, parking, and more. Any infraction of the by-laws can be reported to the City of Greater Sudbury.

Stay informed about your local by-laws.

Health and fire code violations

If you have concerns about potential health violations involving your off-campus accommodations, contact Public Health Sudbury & Districts, Public Health Sudbury & Districts – Housing.

If you have concerns about potential fire code violations involving your off-campus accommodations, contact Greater Sudbury Fire Services, Services and Permits. You can request a fire inspection at 705-674-4455, Ext. 3743.

Don’t get scammed!

Stay informed on how to recognize rental scams and avoid them. Online rentals searches can be hit or miss; the safest way to find housing online is to use sources you trust.

Here are some tips to avoid rental scams provided by Places4Students:

  • Double-check your information. Ask for confirmation letters, legal documents, and any information that legitimizes the rental situation
  • Never give out personal financial information
  • Trust your instincts
  • Never wire funds to unknown contacts
  • Always view the property before providing a deposit
