Honorary Degrees Nomination Operating Procedure

Purpose

To outline the procedure for the nomination of honorary degree recipients.

Scope

The recipients of honorary degrees are members of the general public which may include students, alumni, employees, advisory committee members, former members of the Board of Governors, or former public officials.

Definitions

Honorary Degree: A credential which recognizes exceptional individuals who have achieved a distinguished status and/or made a significant contribution at the College, municipal, provincial, national, or international level.

College Community: All students, staff, and volunteers of the College.

Operating Procedure

  1. General
    1. Annually all members of the College community will be invited, typically in September to submit nominations to the Office of the President, by November 15th.
    2. The nominator will contact the nominee to inform them of the nomination and sign off on the Nomination Form.
    3. The selection committee will review the nominations and provide recommendations to the President by March.
    4. Through the President, the Nominations Committee will review the recommendations and endorse potential recipients for approval by the Board of Governors at the April Board meeting.
    5. The President’s Office (or designate) will contact the recipient to determine if the recipient is willing to accept the award and be present at the Convocation ceremony or alternate event.
    6. The Office of the President will notify the nominator of the successful candidate and notify other nominators of the status of their nomination.
    7. In addition, each Academic School will be notified of the successful candidate who will be granted an honorary credential.

Office of the President is responsible for:

  • Ensuring implementation and compliance of the Honorary Degrees process.
  • Reviewing, updating, approving, and communicating changes to this procedure.

Planning, Institutional Research & Quality is responsible for:

  • Ensuring the development, review, and availability of this procedure.
