FedNor funding will support the work of the Centre for Smart Mining at Cambrian College

Viviane Lapointe, Member of Parliament for Sudbury, today announced a FedNor investment of $1,050,000 in Cambrian College’s Centre for Smart Mining (CSM). The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for FedNor.

With FedNor’s support, CSM will expand its research and training services to meet growing demands in the mining sector. Over three years, CSM will work with up to 145 mining technology small and medium-sized enterprises, offering access to advanced equipment and expertise, and delivering customized upskilling programs in areas like automation, AI, and electric vehicle (EV) development. The Centre will also broaden its research into EV powertrain testing and critical mineral extraction technologies to support Canada’s clean economy goals.

The project will roll out in phases: Year one will focus on scaling operations, hiring new staff, acquiring advanced equipment, and expanding partnerships. Year two will grow the research portfolio and enhance student training with certifications in key technical areas. By year three, CSM will be operating at full capacity, delivering a wide range of services and pursuing long-term sustainability to support future growth in the EV and critical minerals sectors.

These efforts will strengthen Sudbury’s global leadership in mining innovation, support workforce development, and drive sustainable growth across Northern Ontario.

“Northern Ontario has long been a leader in mining innovation, and this investment is about making sure we stay ahead of the curve. By supporting Cambrian College’s Centre for Smart Mining, we’re helping local businesses adopt new technologies, future-proof the workforce, and drive sustainable growth. This project is a great example of how FedNor is building strong communities and a strong economy in Sudbury and across the North.”

  • The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister Jobs and Families and Minister Responsible for FedNor

“In Greater Sudbury, mining isn’t just an industry – it’s part of who we are. By investing in Cambrian College’s Centre for Smart Mining, we’re helping to ensure that our community remains at the forefront of innovation, sustainability, and opportunity. This funding will support local businesses, create good jobs, and give students the tools they need to succeed – right here at home.”

  • Viviane Lapointe, Member of Parliament for Sudbury

“I want to thank the Government of Canada, through FedNor, for this support of the work of Cambrian’s Centre for Smart Mining. This funding will allow us to increase our applied research capacity and grow our partnerships in the mining industry, which is a key goal of our new five-year strategic plan. It also benefits students who will work on these research projects by putting them in direct contact with potential employers. It’s great for our college, our community, and our students.”

  • Kristine Morrissey, President, Cambrian College
