Media Release – Greater Sudbury Police Service and Cambrian College celebrate Police Week – May 12
May 12, 2025

SUDBURY – May 11-17 is National Police Week in Canada, and to mark the occasion, Cambrian College and the Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS) held Police Day on Cambrian’s Barry Downe campus.
Police Day featured several activities, including a fitness competition, a display and demonstration of GSPS vehicles and equipment, an information fair, and a question-and-answer session.
“Police Week is a time to celebrate the vital role policing plays in protecting Ontario and strengthening our communities,” says Sara Cunningham, Chief of the Greater Sudbury Police Service. “It reminds us that safety and well-being are not achieved alone — they are built through strong community partnerships, collaboration, and trust. Through community engagement, we have the opportunity to highlight the many sections and services within our Police Service, each contributing in unique ways to the safety of our community. I want to sincerely thank all members of our Service for their unwavering dedication, professionalism, and commitment to making a difference every day. Together, with our community, we continue to build a safer, healthier, and more vibrant Greater Sudbury.”
Cambrian College partners with the GSPS throughout the year on a number of initiatives.
GSPS cadets undertake fitness testing at Cambrian’s Barry Downe campus, using an obstacle course designed by faculty from the two-year Police Foundations program. The GSPS Emergency Response Team has also used Cambrian as a venue for hostage negotiation training. International students participate in the GSPS Ride Along initiative, and Cambrian is one of the largest participants in the annual GSPS Truth and Reconciliation Relay.
“Police Week is a great opportunity to express our support and gratitude for all members of police services everywhere who work so hard every day to keep our communities safe,” says Cambrian College President Kristine Morrissey. “It is also a time to celebrate the wonderful collaborations we have with the Greater Sudbury Police Service, and other police services across northeastern Ontario. Policing is changing and we want to be at the forefront of providing our police services with the highly skilled and trained candidates they need to meet the challenges of modern-day policing.”
