Volleyball players earn Female and Male Athlete of the Year awars

SUDBURY – Volleyball players took the top honours this year at the annual Cambrian College athletics banquet.

Liam Hansen of Perth, Ontario was named Male Athlete of the year, while Sudbury’s Mackenzie Selk was selected Female Athlete of the Year.

Hansen was also named the most valuable player for the Cambrian Shield men’s volleyball team, which won the silver medal at this year’s Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) championships held at Cambrian in February. Earlier this year, Hansen was also named to the OCAA West Division Second All-Star team.

“It is pretty incredible, that out of all the great athletes at Cambrian, for me to be picked as the Male Athlete of the Year is pretty amazing,” says Hansen. “I worked really hard this year, and I’m glad to be recognized for it and I want to say thank you to my friends and family for coming out to the games and supporting me.”

Mackenzie Selk was a co-winner of the most valuable player award for the women’s volleyball team, along with Carlie Pappano of North Bay. The pair also made the OCAA West Division First All-star team.

“Cambrian has offered me such a great opportunity and this is an amazing award,” says Selk. “I am so grateful to be part of this team, this community and this college.”

Cambrian College competes in men’s and women’s varsity badminton, cross-country running, soccer and volleyball, as well as men’s and women’s intramural cricket.

Sault Ste. Marie’s Chelsea Kennedy was a two-sport winner at the athletic banquet. She was named Most Valuable Player for the badminton team and Rookie of the Year for women’s soccer.

“The popularity of varsity and intramural sports on campus is growing, as our teams are finding more success, and it really adds to the atmosphere,” says Tim Yu, Cambrian’s manager of athletics and varsity sports. “Our athletes are model students, who set very high standards for themselves in the classroom and in their sports. They are great ambassadors for Cambrian. We wish our graduating athletes all the success in the world as they move on to a new phase in their lives, and we look forward to many of our athletes coming back next year.”
