SUDBURY, ON – July is Pride Month in Sudbury, and Cambrian College has several events planned this week to mark the occasion.
Pride Month provides an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the contributions, experiences, and diversity of Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, and other sexually and gender-diverse (2SLGBTQIA+) individuals. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of creating spaces where everyone can feel safe, supported, and able to be their authentic selves.
The celebration of Pride Month also aligns with Cambrian College’s strategic commitment to foster a warm and inclusive campus experience and culture.
“At Cambrian, Pride Month is both a celebration and a reflection of our ongoing commitment to equity, inclusion, and belonging,” says Gaston Cotnoir, Manager of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. “We are proud to support a campus culture where students and employees from all backgrounds and identities feel welcomed, respected, and empowered. Creating culturally safe and inclusive spaces helps ensure that every member of our community has the opportunity to thrive.”
Throughout the year, Cambrian offers a variety of spaces, services, and initiatives that support inclusion and belonging for students and employees. These include the KPMG Pride Centre, which provides a welcoming space for connection, support, education, and advocacy; the Women’s Resource Centre; and the Spiritual Resource Centre, which offers opportunities for reflection, dialogue, and community building for individuals of all faiths and spiritual traditions.
Visitors to Cambrian’s Barrydowne Campus are also welcomed by the college’s rainbow crosswalk, a visible symbol of inclusion and support for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
Events on campus during Pride Month include a flag-naming contest, button making, treats, and film screenings.
“Having these events on campus is a great way for 2SLGBTQIA+ students and their allies to meet and discover their campus community, and that helps everyone feel comfortable and supported,” adds Patricia Schonrock, Cambrian’s Inclusion Coordinator. “The events are a lot of fun and we’re so glad students enjoy taking part.”
Cambrian College is Northern Ontario’s largest college, with more than 100 programs. Cambrian’s main campus is in Greater Sudbury, with satellite centres in Espanola and Little Current. For more information about Cambrian College, click here.
