SUDBURY, ON –   Cambrian College is recognizing National Indigenous History Month with a week of activities designed to celebrate Indigenous cultures, traditions, and contributions while fostering learning, understanding, and reconciliation across the campus community.

Observed each June, National Indigenous History Month is an opportunity to recognize the rich histories, cultures, resilience, and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

The month culminates with National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, a date chosen to coincide with the summer solstice, which holds cultural significance for many Indigenous communities across Canada.

Throughout the week, students and employees will have opportunities to participate in a variety of educational and cultural activities, including Inuit games, a lacrosse demonstration, Indigenous-inspired cuisine, a Lunch and Learn focused on powwow history and etiquette, and a curated display of Indigenous books, films, documentaries, and music in the library.

“National Indigenous History Month is an opportunity to celebrate the strength, resilience, and diversity of Indigenous peoples while creating space for meaningful learning and reflection,” says Andrea Dokis, Director of the Wabnode Centre for Indigenous Services at Cambrian College. “Through these activities, we hope to deepen understanding, strengthen relationships, and encourage our campus community to continue their journey toward reconciliation.”

Indigenous students represent 12 per cent of Cambrian’s post-secondary enrolment, up from 10 per cent the previous year. The College welcomed 593 Indigenous students in 2025. while partnerships with 77 Indigenous communities and organizations continue to support student access and success.

“Indigenous learners are an important part of the Cambrian community and help shape the vibrant and inclusive campus experience we strive to create,” says Alison De Luisa, Vice-President of Human Resources and Student Services. “National Indigenous History Month provides an opportunity to celebrate Indigenous cultures and achievements while reinforcing our commitment to truth, reconciliation, and student success.”

As part of its commitment to truth and reconciliation, Cambrian has also adopted 14 of the Calls to Action in the national report on truth and reconciliation. You can learn more by visiting https://cambriancollege.ca/wabnode.
