SUDBURY, ON – Nearly 400 Grade 8 students from across Greater Sudbury got a first-hand look at the many career opportunities connected to mining during Vale Career Day this week at Cambrian College.
The interactive event had students rotate through a series of displays and hands-on activities in several locations on campus, including the Vale Electric Vehicle (EV) Lab, the eDome, and outdoor courtyard. Each station paired Vale team members with Cambrian representatives connected to the programs that help prepare students for careers in the mining sector.
“Vale Career Day is all about helping young students connect the dots between their interests today and the careers they may pursue tomorrow,” says Dawn Vagnini, Recruitment Superintendent at Vale Base Metals. “Mining is a modern, innovative industry that relies on a wide range of professions and skill sets. Through events like this, we hope students begin to see themselves in these careers and understand the many pathways available to them.”
Students explored career areas ranging from heavy equipment technician or operator, engineering, and environmental monitoring to human resources, technology, workplace safety, skilled trades, and emergency response.
“Many young students may not realize the breadth of opportunities connected to the mining sector,” says Brandi Braithwaite, Cambrian’s Director of Alumni and Development. “This event provides an opportunity to showcase not only the variety of rewarding careers available, but also the pathways students can take through education and hands-on learning experiences here at Cambrian College.”
Vale Career Day also featured a barbeque and live music.
Vale Career Day is one initiative of Cambrian College and Vale Base Metals as part of their ongoing partnership to build awareness of the opportunities in the mining sector and support workforce development.
