Cambrian hosts 58th annual Athletics Banquet – April 7

Cambrian College celebrated outstanding achievement in varsity sports at its annual Athletics Banquet. Carlie Pappano of North Bay was named Female Athlete of the Year, while Sudbury’s Sam George was selected Male Athlete of the Year.

Volleyball players earn both Male and Female Athlete of the Year honours

SUDBURY, ON – Cambrian College celebrated outstanding achievements in varsity sports this year at its annual Athletics Banquet, held last week at the Barry Downe campus.

Cambrian competes in men’s and women’s badminton, cross-country running, soccer, and volleyball in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA).

It was the volleyball players who grabbed the highest awards this year.

Carlie Pappano of North Bay was named Female Athlete of the Year, while Sudbury’s Sam George was selected Male Athlete of the Year.

Pappano was also named co-MVP of the volleyball team. This season, she also was chosen as an OCAA First Team All Star, and a Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) Academic All Canadian.

Sam George was also a co-MVP of the silver-medalist men’s volleyball team. He was selected as an OCAA West Division First Team All Star, and a CCAA All Canadian.

Women’s volleyball player Abby Laporte of Sudbury was named this year’s recipient of Dynamic Therapy Perseverance Award, for an athlete who overcomes challenges while succeeding in academics and athletics.

Cross Country Running

Rookie of the Year: Yuvraj Singh (India)

Most Improved: Anh Phuong (Vietnam)

Coach’s Award: Alyssa Atichison (Sudbury)

Most Valuable Runner: Shaun McKim (Sudbury)

Men’s Soccer

Rookie of the Year: Arvin Alcid (Oshawa) & Elie Yoma (Montreal)

Most Improved: Miguel Samonte (Philippines)

Coach’s Award: Rushawn Bascoe (Chatham)

Most Valuable Player: Siah Stone (Oakville)  

Women’s Soccer

Rookie of the Year: Olivia Skinkle (Brampton)

Most Improved: Ainslee Buchan (Sault Ste. Marie)

Coach’s Award: Molly Watson (Sault Ste. Marie)

Most Valuable Player: Olivia Skinkle (Brampton)  

Men’s Volleyball

Rookie of the Year: Ethan Wheatley (Onaping Falls)

Coach’s Award: Kyle Perreault (Sudbury), Jason Diotte (Sudbury)

Most Valuable Player: Liam Hansen (Perth), Cale Bast (Sudbury), Sam George (Sudbury)  

Women’s Volleyball

Rookie of the Year: Camille Barr (Sudbury)

Most Improved: Jersey Masson (Kenora)

Coach’s Award: Maisie Craig (Sudbury), Mackenzie Selk (Hanmer)

Most Valuable Player: Carlie Pappano (North Bay), Allison Nordquist (Sudbury)

SWSE Scholarship

This bursary is presented to a full time Cambrian College Varsity Athletes with exceptional sportsmanship qualities and strong community involvement and a minimum GPA of 3.0

Sudbury Masters Running Club Bursary

Each bursary is to be presented annually to Cambrian Varsity Cross-Country students who meet the following criteria:

1)         Must be a member of Cambrian’s Cross-Country running team for the current season

2)         And in good Academic standing

New Sudbury Masters Running Club Scholarship

This scholarship is available to any student, with priority going to any varsity athlete with preference to a crit Athlete. The recipient must be in good academic standing and have financial need.

Peter Guy Memorial Bursary

  • Ethan Lalonde (Sudbury)

Vern Dow Memorial Bursary

  • Owen Perron (Hanmer), Reyne Hoare (Vermillion, Alberta), Dominik Brunette-Royer (Sudbury)

Dynamic Therapy Perseverance Award

This award recognizes the athlete who was able to best overcome hardships and/or difficulties this past season, while continuing to succeed in both their academic and athletic endeavors. This athlete must maintain a minimum of a 3.5 GPA and is in good standing with their respective team.
