Cambrian College is launching a new, two-year Building Construction Technician - Carpentry (CRTN) diploma program. The program equips students with advanced technical knowledge, hands-on experience, and the business fundamentals needed to succeed in both residential and light commercial construction environments.

SUDBURY – With demand high for skilled workers in building trades, Cambrian College is preparing a new, two-year Building Construction Technician – Carpentry (CRTN) diploma program.

The program equips students with advanced technical knowledge, hands-on experience, and the business fundamentals needed to succeed in both residential and light commercial construction environments.

Students will learn how to review and interpret building plans, collaborate with multiple tradespeople, apply sustainability practices, understand building codes, and ensure projects meet safety and legal standards. Through real-world projects and technical training, graduates are prepared to join building teams where expertise, accountability, and leadership matter.

“The construction industry needs skilled professionals who understand more than just how to build — they need people who can think critically, lead safely, and adapt to modern building standards,” says Kim Crane, Interim Dean, School of Skilled Trades. “This program gives students the advanced training and real-world experience employers are looking for, while also supporting those who want to eventually run their own businesses.”

The program emphasizes safety throughout all semesters and includes a capstone project that allows students to apply their learning in a practical, experiential setting. In the final semester, students complete business-focused courses that provide a foundation for entrepreneurship.

To support flexibility and workforce readiness, the program offers multiple pathways. Students can complete the first year, enter the workforce to take advantage of seasonal employment, and return to complete the second year. There is also an optional co-op opportunity, a shared first year with the Carpentry and Renovation Techniques certificate, and a January start option that allows for accelerated completion over four continuous semesters.

Graduates are prepared for entry-level positions across the construction sector in such roles as framing carpenter, concrete form worker, interior systems installer, exterior finisher, door and window installer, and junior estimator. Graduates may also pursue entrepreneurship in the skilled trades.

Applications for the Building Construction Technician – Carpentry program are now open. Learn more at https://cambriancollege.ca/CRTN.
