Something to Smile About – Cambrian College Offers Dental Assisting Program – October 27

Program designed to meet the growing need for dental assistants
SUDBURY – Cambrian College is adding Dental Assisting to its suite of programs, beginning this January.
With a combination of online courses and weekend sessions on campus, the 10-month program provides flexibility for students to earn their certificate while continuing to work. Students also complete a seven-week placement to provide them with additional hands-on experience in a dental practice.
“Dental assistants play a vital role in supporting dentists and dental hygienists, and enhancing patient care,” says Rachel Steels, Dean of Cambrian’s School of Health Sciences. “They perform a wide range of clinical and administrative duties, including infection control, x-rays, assisting with procedures, chairside support, patient education, and office coordination.”
The decision to offer Dental Assisting was driven by strong community and industry demand. Dental practices across Northern Ontario have expressed a growing need for qualified support staff. By offering the program, Cambrian College aims to help address workforce shortages, particularly in underserved regions.
“Dental assistants are essential members of the oral health care team,” explains Steels. “We are proud to offer this program, helping students launch rewarding careers while supporting the delivery of quality oral health care in our communities.”
The curriculum aligns with industry standards, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for entry-level roles in dental offices, clinics, and related health care settings. Upon successful completion of Levels 1 and 2, graduates will be eligible to write the certification examinations required to practice as regulated dental assistants in Ontario.
