SUDBURY – Encouraging more young women to pursue careers in technology was the focus of an event yesterday at Cambrian College.
Cambrian hosted its third annual Sofvie’s Women in Tech event, sponsored by Sofvie Inc., a Sudbury-based technology company specializing in health and safety software for the workplace.
“Sofvie is incredibly proud to support the Women in Tech event, as it aligns with our commitment to fostering a future in technology where everyone has the opportunity to thrive,” says Gus Minor, Chief Operating Officer of Sofvie. “We believe in empowering diverse talent and championing career paths that inspire innovation, inclusivity, and success for all.”
More than 100 female students from six high schools across northeastern Ontario were on campus to take part in workshops, experiment with various software and gadgets, and play games with a technological theme.
Workshops included:
- Network Ninjas: Cryptic Ciphers in Minecraft. Students learned about cryptography using a Minecraft world. Cryptography is the process of hiding (or coding) information so that only the intended recipient can read it.
- Data Divas: Visualize, Code, and Conquer AI. Students turned raw numbers into stunning visuals and explored the basics of coding to unlock machine learning.
- Game Makers: The Code Makes the Game. Underneath all the animations, images, jumps, dashes, high scores, and NPC chat boxes is the code that makes games fun. In this workshop, students used GameMaker Studio 2 to write their own simple but interactive game.
- AI Says: Build your own Memory Game. A hands-on adventure where students created their own “Simon Says” memory game using buttons and LEDs. With a sprinkle of AI magic, they programmed unpredictable patterns that will challenge even the sharpest minds.
“We are always so excited to welcome high school students to our IT labs for Women in Tech,” adds Pamela Teed, Chair of Cambrian’s School of Information Technology. “Our faculty designed some great workshops that certainly challenged our participants and hopefully inspired them to answer the call of a career in tech. Women are greatly under-represented in the industry; we’re doing our best to change that trend.”
