SUDBURY – To meet the growing demand for mental health care professionals, Cambrian College is introducing a new, one-of-a-kind, degree-level program.
Beginning in September of 2025, Cambrian is offering a four-year Honours Bachelor of Applied Psychology degree.
It is the first program of its kind in northern Ontario, and the only psychology degree program at an Ontario college to offer multiple majors.
Students in the program will have a common curriculum in the first year. After that, they can pursue a degree in general applied psychology or major in behavioural science or therapeutic practices.
“Psychology is one of the most in-demand fields of study in colleges and universities right across the province, at a time when the need for skilled mental health care workers has never been greater,” says Janice Clarke, Cambrian’s Vice-President Academic. “Our new Applied Psychology degree will be very hands-on in nature so that our graduates can help meet the demand for those services.”
Cambrian’s new Applied Psychology degree will also place special emphasis on addressing trauma, Indigenous mental health care, and issues related to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI).
The program will include an opportunity for students to complete a paid internship, ensuring graduates are prepared for various career paths. Graduates will be able to work as practitioners in community and social agencies, education settings, therapeutic services, research settings, health care, and mental health care services.
This degree can also serve as a pathway to a master’s degree and other graduate-level studies.
The new Honours Bachelor of Applied Psychology is the fourth stand-alone degree-level program to be offered at Cambrian.
“This is the latest example of how Cambrian is adapting to the needs of students and the modern workforce,” explains President Kristine Morrissey. “Employers and students want degree-level theory combined with the extensive practical training that is the specialty of colleges. Factor in our smaller classes and close access to faculty, and we are providing the best of both worlds in our new degree program.”
To help support those interested in pursuing this degree, students who are accepted into the four-year program will be eligible to receive a $1,000 entrance scholarship, with the potential to receive an additional $1,000 in their second semester.
