Cambrian College Students Receive Funding to Promote Northern Tourism

Apr 24, 2024

SUDBURY – A team of students at Cambrian College is receiving funding to help promote Northern Ontario’s culture and economy.

The students are members of the Cambrian chapter of Enactus, an international not-for-profit organization dedicated to inspiring students to take entrepreneurial action to improve the lives of others.

Enactus Cambrian College was one of the successful applicants for a $3,000 grant provided by the RBC Future Launch Project Accelerator. The funding is administered through Enactus.

Since 2020, RBC Future Launch has been a partner on job readiness and work integrated learning programs with Cambrian College.

Cambrian’s project, The Northern Ontario Cultural Immersion Program,

will provide experiences that celebrate the unique cultural, historical, and natural heritage of the region. This initiative aims to equip participants with vital work readiness skills while instilling an appreciation for Indigenous culture and the local tourism industry.

“We have an amazing lineup of exciting and amazing events planned,” says Abhishrii Puri, a student at Cambrian and the president of Enactus Cambrian College. “We have so much culture and history here in our region that sometimes we take it for granted being so close to it. We can’t wait to both introduce and reintroduce the awesome aspects of Greater Sudbury and surrounding areas to everybody.”

Some of the activities planned by Enactus Cambrian College include:

  • Guided visits to historical sites, Indigenous cultural centres, heritage landmarks, and Northern Ontario’s natural beauty spots in collaboration with adventure tourism providers led by knowledgeable local guides and experts.
  • Hands-on workshops in visual arts, crafts and performing arts, complemented by exhibitions showcasing the creative talents of local artists including cooking classes featuring local ingredients and food festivals highlighting regional specialties.
  • Sessions covering essential aspects of tourism such as customer service, tour guiding, event planning, and marketing with hands-on internships with local tourism businesses.

“I am thrilled that Enactus Cambrian College, in only its first year, has been selected as a recipient of an RBC Future Launch Project Accelerator grant!” says Jenna Guse, a professor in Cambrian’s Douglas A. Smith Family School of Business and faculty advisor for Enactus Cambrian College. “I am immensely proud of the dedication and drive displayed by our students who really want to bring about positive change in Northern Ontario.”

All Cambrian students are welcome to join Enactus by contacting enactus@cambriancollege.ca or visiting www.enactus.ca.
