Cambrian College and Donors Provide Nearly $1.5 Million in Scholarships and Bursaries to Students

Mar 28, 2024

More than 700 students received approximately $1.5 million in scholarships and bursaries from Cambrian and its donors.

SUDBURY – It was a packed house last night at Cambrian College as students, alumni and donors gathered at the college to celebrate close to $1.5 million in bursaries and scholarships awarded this year to more than 1,400 students.

“This annual financial awards night is just an amazing celebration of student excellence and the ongoing generosity of our donors,” says President Kristine Morrissey. “It is heartwarming and reassuring as the leader of a post-secondary institution that we are all still one family and one community who share in the collective dedication to see our students thrive.”

Each year, Cambrian College offers students the opportunity to apply for more than 900 scholarships and bursaries that are provided courtesy the college and its many donors.

“We can all appreciate that inflation has taken a toll on housing, food, supplies, transportation and just about everything else students need to get through the year,” adds Melanie Cacciotti, Cambrian’s executive director of alumni and development. “That load is a little lighter thanks to some key people and organizations whose kindness and ability to give is never taken for granted.”

One of the students who received a bursary this year was 18-year-old Lia Shank of Sturgeon Falls, who is enrolled in Cambrian’s Welding and Fabrication program. She spoke at the awards ceremony about the importance of bursaries to her journey.

“I am profoundly grateful for the support that this bursary has provided,” says Shank. “To me personally, it is not just about financial assistance; it is about the belief that someone saw the potential in my dreams and decided to invest in them. This bursary has given me the confidence to dream bigger, set my sights higher and believe in my ability to make a meaningful impact in my chosen field.”

Among the attendees at the celebration were Keith and Margaret Lindsay, distinguished Cambrian alumni who initially met during the program and are now happily married. Since 2016, they have generously funded an annual scholarship for deserving students.

“We are so honoured to witness the tangible impact of our support firsthand each time we attend this event,” express Keith and Margaret. “Witnessing the profound effect support like ours has on students fills us with so much pride. Cambrian holds a special place in our hearts, and we are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to its continued success.”
