Cambrian College Expands Situation Awareness Training for Students

SUDBURY – Reading the street! Cambrian College is expanding the number of programs in which it will offer Arcuri Group’s Situation Awareness Specialist© (SAS) training.

Situation awareness is the ability to read your immediate environment and circumstances. Situation awareness helps improve your understanding of how, when and where violence occurs, so you can avoid it or counter it.

Arcuri Group provides situation awareness training to individual and corporate clients in more than 60 countries.

Last year, the SAS training was introduced to students in Police Foundations, Community and Justice Services, Protection Security and Investigations, and Corporate Safety and Security.

Starting this September, it will be expanded to include students in four social services programs, including Child and Youth Care, Developmental Service Worker, Early Childhood Education, and Social Service Worker.

“We received tremendous feedback from our School of Justice students who took the training last year,” says Janice Clarke, Dean of Cambrian’s School of Justice, Community Services and General Studies. “We are now expanding this training to programs in our community service programs, to help our students to understand and deal with random and potentially threatening events that can occur in that sector. We believe that this training will be invaluable for our students to help keep them and those that they serve safe. We also believe that it will give them a competitive advantage as they enter the workforce.”

“We are seeing a substantial increase in requests for training from the education, social services, and health care sectors,” says Rich Meyer of Arcuri Group. “People working in these sectors are being increasingly called upon to diffuse potentially dangerous situations, everything from mental health crises to workplace violence, to domestic situations. Leaders in these sectors are telling us they want training focused on prevention, to empower their people to be more capable. We’ve designed this program to help people understand the situation they are walking into, asses the risks and act accordingly to help ensure the safety and well-being of themselves and the people they are entrusted to care for.”

Upon successful completion of the four-hour training session, students will receive Arcuri Group’s Situation Awareness Specialist© (SAS) certification, over and above the diploma they earn from Cambrian College.
