SUDBURY – Have you seen those action movies where heroes use skill and street smarts to anticipate a dangerous situation, and then get themselves or others to safety?
There is a name for that skill set: situational awareness. Students in the School of Justice at Cambrian College in Sudbury, Ontario, are about to get enhanced training in those skills, with the help of one of their instructors.
Leah Bouthillier is a professor in Cambrian’s Law and Justice programs. She has just been certified as a Situation Awareness Specialist© – Advanced Practitioner (SAS-AP).
“I’m very pleased to receive this certification because it is very high-level training, and I’m looking forward to passing that knowledge on to our students,” says Bouthillier.
Bouthillier received her certification from Arcuri Group, an education management company that specializes in advanced situational awareness training, with clients in more than 60 countries world-wide.
“Leah is currently one of a handful of public college instructors in Ontario to achieve this certification, so that it quite an accomplishment,” says Rich Meyer, Co-owner and Head of Global Operations for Arcuri Group. “We are thrilled to have a strategic partnership with Cambrian College to provide our Situation Awareness Specialist© training to Cambrian students with Leah as their instructor.”
Cambrian is the third public college in Ontario to offer Arcuri Group’s training. It will be offered to students in Community and Justice Services; Corporate Safety and Security; Police Foundations; and Protection, Security and Investigation.
Upon successful completion of the training, students will receive Arcuri Group’s Situation Awareness Specialist© (SAS) certification, over and above the diploma they earn from Cambrian College.
“This is an amazing opportunity for our students to learn comprehensive skills that will help keep them safe on the job and help them better protect the people they are serving,” adds Bouthillier. “It will also give them a competitive advantage as they pursue their careers, as these skills are in high demand in these professions.”
