About

Global Skills Opportunity is a new funding grant that provides virtual and travel opportunities to eligible Cambrian College students to study or work internationally as part of their academic program.

As a participant, you will receive funding to complete a short-term outbound mobility experience with one of our academic partners located in Italy, Germany, Ireland, Denmark, New Zealand, Australia and United Arab Emirates.

Participants must meet the following requirements:

  • Full-time or part-time domestic student* at Cambrian College
  • All domestic students are welcome to apply, however special consideration and priority will be given first to students who identify as being part of the following three categories below:
    • student who requires financial aid
    • student with disability
    • student who reports being an Indigenous person
  • Must have completed one (1) full semester
  • Minimum academic standing of 2.0 GPA
  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident with a valid passport**
  • Meet visa-entry requirement of the host country
  • At least 18 years old
  • Provide a faculty reference letter and a video essay or written essay

Application process

Participants must ensure they meet the following requirements at the time of application:

  • Full-time or part-time domestic student* at Cambrian College
  • Must have completed one (1) full semester
  • Minimum academic standing of 2.0 GPA.
  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident with a valid passport (Permanent residents with a valid passport must ensure they meet the entry requirements for the host country prior to applying.)
  • At least 18 years old
  • Provide one (1) reference letter from one of these sources: high school teacher, professor, employer, or Cambrian College administrator
  • Provide a video essay or written essay
    • Essay details:
    • Topic: Why do you want to be considered for this opportunity? Please ensure to cover the importance of acquiring international experience and the impact it could have on your studies and job prospects.
    • Word count: Minimum 500 words
    • Video length: Maximum 120 seconds

The selection committee will require approval from your program chair and/or dean. Applicants who do not get approval will be automatically disqualified.

Selection process

Applications are reviewed by the Cambrian College Global Skills Opportunity Selection Committee. Canadian Government Funding requires that priority be given to students who identify in one of the three defined groups: student of Indigenous descent; student with a disability; student who requires financial aid.

An acceptance letter will be sent by email 4 weeks before the start of the experience. Unsuccessful applicants will also be notified of the Committee’s decision.

As per the Global Skills Opportunity guidelines, participants who identify with one of three defined demographic groups will receive a larger sum of funding for their experience.

Definitions

A student who reports to be in receipt of Canada Student Grants, or similar non-repayable student financial assistance offered by provinces and territories, or, in the absence of receiving non-repayable student financial assistance, can provide information to demonstrate that they require financial support in order to participate in the Global Skills Opportunity.

  • A student who reports being an Indigenous person, that is, First Nations, Métis, or Inuk (Inuit).
  • A student who self identifies as Indigenous to the Canadian portion of Turtle Island.
Funding

Funding dollars will be used to pay for tuition fees and support equipment where needed.

Grant funding received through Global Skills Opportunity WILL NOT have an impact on a student’s eligibility to Canada Student Loans or Grants.

The funding received through this program does not require payback, but you should consult with your other funders if you be receiving additional financial support through bursaries, sponsorship, or other programs.

Students who belong to one of the three categories have a maximum of $10,000 to cover their mobility experience. While other students are eligible to receive a maximum of $5000. Costs that fall outside of the maximum threshold are expected to be covered by the student.

Acceptance requirements

The Cambrian College Global Skills Opportunity Selection Committee will decide which opportunity will be assigned to you based on availability and program fit.

  • Students are required to attend their assigned classes, activities and any other obligations tied to the experience.
  • Students are required to submit a pre-participation (virtual) form as well as a post-participation report through the online portal (that will be shared once accepted into the program). Both reports consist of a short series of questions in the form of surveys for the purpose of program administration and evaluation.
  • Provide a testimonial and photo after the experience either by video or in written format.

Yes. You will be provided with a terms and conditions document before the start of your experience.

A student may terminate their study/work abroad experience earlier than anticipated for serious health concerns or safety/security issues. If, due to unforeseen circumstances, a student must end their study/work abroad stay earlier than expected, it is their responsibility to inform their Cambrian College – Global Skills Opportunity contact by email immediately. Cambrian College also reserves the right to end the study/work experience abroad for a student or a group of students if they feel their personal safety or security is at risk.

If for whatever reason you can’t attend the experience you were selected for, you may withdraw your application at any time by contacting the Cambrian College – Global Skills Opportunity contact by email immediately. You can resubmit your application for another experience, but we can’t guarantee that you will be selected again.

The Global Skills Opportunity team will conduct an assessment of your needs to participate in the experience and will provide support and funds where possible and as needed.

About the Experience

The Global Skills Opportunity at Cambrian College is focused on providing students with a cultural experience. The experience may not be related to your program of study and is geared towards developing your intercultural competencies and global skills.

This experience will include elective lectures, excursions, and cultural classes.
