Community Centre Staff

JOB SUMMARY

NATURE AND SCOPE: The Community Centre Staff (CCS) is an upper-year student who is expected to act as a role model, mentor, resource and support to students living in residence. The primary objective of the CCS and the Residence Life Department is to foster a community environment that eases the student transition into college/university and supports the personal and academic success of their students. The CCS will live in an assigned residence room and be responsible for supervising the Rafters Community Centre during scheduled shifts. They will also work to create a safe and respectful environment.

CONTRACT PERIOD: From the beginning of the CCS Training Program in August (approx. August 27) after the last scheduled exam in the Winter Semester (approx. April 30).

REMUNERATION: CCSs are compensated at a rate $11.25 per hour. All CCSs will be paid for the full duration of the Residence Life Staff training program. During the academic year, CCSs will be scheduled for approximately 8 hours per week. Note: All CCSs will be expected to follow all residence application and admission procedures, including paying all residence fees prior to moving into residence.

ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS: CCSs will report directly to the Residence Life Coordinator (or designate) who will provide training, support and assistance in the execution of the CCS’s responsibilities. CCSs work in co-operation with other staff including but not limited to; the General Manager (GM), the Residence Services Supervisor (RSS), Residence Services Representative (RSR), Resident Advisors (RAs), other residence and college staff, student leadership groups and community partners.

  • A minimum academic achievement of C+ (65%)

  • Valid Criminal Record Check (will be conducted by Residence Management)
  • Any other Institutional requirements deemed necessary

ACADEMICS AND TIME COMMITMENT: All CCSs are students first and are therefore expected to model positive academic habits and maintain a strong GPA. CCSs are expected to give the responsibilities of the position priority over all other activities except those, which pertain to his / her academic success.

POSITION DETAILS

1 – Resource, Helper, and Role Model

  • Read, understand and model the expectations of student behaviour detailed in the CCS Conditional Offer of Employment, the Student Resident Agreement (SRA), the Residence Handbook, the Residence Community Living Standards (RCLS) and associated residence and college/university handbooks, policies and procedures.
  • Be visible, approachable and accessible during scheduled shifts and associated duties.
  • Serve as a role model for others at all times; behaving in a manner that exemplifies the values of the residence and college/university community.
  • Respond to questions and concerns raised by the community in a timely and responsible manner.
  • Refer students to appropriate resources when needed.
  • Maintain the highest level of confidentiality in regards to resident issues.

2 – Programmer / Community Builder

  • Work with the Residence Life Coordinator to assess community needs and to develop monthly programming which attempts to address the needs identified.
  • Advise all staff and students about planned activities through individual and group meetings.
  • Encourage all residents to become involved in floor, residence, and campus activities.

3 – General Responsibilities

  • As scheduled by the Residence Life Coordinator, CCSs are expected to work a minimum of two (2) shifts per week (approximately 8 hours).
  • Attend all scheduled meetings, including but not limited to:
    i. A one hour monthly staff meeting,
    ii. Regular individual reporting meetings with the Residence Life Coordinator
  • Attend all scheduled training sessions, including but not limited to:
    i. Residence Life Staff Property Training Program (1 week in August),
    ii. In-service training sessions
  • Assist at Fall Open House (anticipated date is November 8, 2015, but subject to change) Spring Open house (anticipated date is March 28, 2016)
  • Complete all assigned administrative tasks, including but not limited to: property event request forms, event evaluations, waivers, shift reports, etc.
  • Wear the uniform as directed.
  • Remain in the residence during scheduled shifts.
  • Complete all other duties as required by Residence Management.
