Partnerships are like a fine wine; they get better with age. In November 2019, we started an applied research project with Sofvie Inc., a Sudbury-based tech firm, to investigate how data analytics could be used to enhance the health and safety of employees in the mining industry.

As the partnership evolved, it soon became clear that the project has had a far more encompassing impact on the company and student researchers at Cambrian College. Working with our students for the past year and a half, Sofvie has recognized the value they have provided. Since the project commenced, the company has hired six of our students on a full-time basis and has plans to hire more after they graduate.

We feel there is no better testament to the success of an applied research partnership than when our industry partners hire our students. We continue to help Sofvie tackle some of their R&D challenges, while providing experiential learning opportunities to our students that they have leveraged into full-time employment after graduation. At the end of the day, that’s what applied research is all about.
