Cambrian College Hosts Student Innovation Challenge Powered by RBC Future Launch

Posted on Wednesday March 15, 2023

SUDBURY – Cambrian College is giving a platform to students who have had an “a ha” moment - a bright idea for a new or improved product or service.

The Cambrian Student Innovation Challenge Powered by RBC Future Launch, is being held April 5, during Cambrian’s Research and Innovation Week.

Students taking part in the Innovation Challenge complete a series of workshops to help them prepare to pitch their ideas before a panel of industry judges.

Winners receive cash prizes totalling $6,500 to help them move their ideas forward.

“Everyone at Cambrian R&D looks forward to this event every spring,” says Dr. Mike Commito, Director of Cambrian R&D, the applied research department of Cambrian College. “It really shows off how creative, innovative, and dynamic our students are. Each year they pitch some great ideas that truly do have the potential to be developed into viable businesses. The talent really does shine through and who knows, the ideas we hear in April might be game changers that industries are looking for in the future.”

A highlight of this year’s Research and Innovation Week is a special presentation from Joe Fiduccia and his one-of-kind Optimus Is Here custom truck. Optimus is Here is the world’s only fan-built, full-scale replica of Optimus Prime from Transformers: Age of Extinction.

Research and Innovation Week will also feature the official opening of Cambrian’s new Chemical Analysis research lab, Applied Research Day, and a live podcast of Cambrian R&D’s podcast, The Unlikely Innovators.

“Cambrian R&D has been making amazing strides on the national stage when it comes to the amount and quality of the work it does,” says Kristine Morrissey, Cambrian’s Vice-President Administration, which includes applied research. “Because we have greatly increased our applied research activities, we decided to go with a full-blown Research and Innovation Week this year instead of just a single day. We want to really celebrate and promote the applied research that is putting us on the map.”
