SUDBURY – Talk about a graduation gift. Being recognized as one of the top three most-skilled students across Canada in his field might be the best way for Mathieu Dupuis to wrap up his time at Cambrian College.

The Electrical Engineering Technology student, who graduates this week, was competing with top students from every province at the 2022 Skills Canada competition last month in Vancouver.

Mathieu was awarded the bronze medal in the category of Industrial Control.  He also won silver in that category at Skills Ontario earlier in May.

“Winning a bronze medal at Skills Canada was the most rewarding experience I have had during my time in college,” says Dupuis. “The opportunity to attend the Skills Canada Competition is something I will never forget. This summer, I will be working as an electrical co-op student for Vale with the goal of pursuing an apprenticeship to become a licensed electrician.”

The 2022 Skills Canada competition was held in Vancouver, British Columbia. More than 300 students competed in over 35 skilled trade and technology categories.  It is the first time Skills Canada has taken place in-person since 2019.

Mathieu’s bronze medal is the 11th medal a Cambrian student has earned at Skills Canada that will go alongside the 56 medals from Skills Ontario Cambrian has been awarded since the school began competing in 2005.

“Congratulations to Mathieu on his success. He pulled off the double which is really special and very hard to do,” says Bill Best, President of Cambrian College. “Year after year, we do well in skills competitions because we have amazing students who learn from incredible faculty and support staff. These are very high-level competitions. Our students punch above their weight and can compete with any school in the country.”
