Cambrian College Dental Hygiene Students Raise Money for Food Banks

Posted on Monday May 3, 2021

SUDBURY – A virtual walk brought real smiles, thanks to Cambrian College’s Dental Hygiene students.

Taking their annual Walk for A Smile fundraiser online this year, Cambrian College Dental Hygiene students weren’t letting anything stop them from raising some impressive money for two local and very important charities.

A total of $3,132.00 was raised this year and will be donated to the Cambrian Student Food Bank and the Sudbury Food Bank.

“I am very proud of the work our students have done to support this initiative during Oral Health Month and National Dental Hygienists Week,” says Nancy Rose, a Professor in the Dental Hygiene program. “This annual event is one of the ways that our program cultivates the value of advocating for vulnerable populations and the spirit of giving back to our community.”

This year, students chose to support the local food banks knowing that fellow student at the Cambrian campus and people in the Greater Sudbury community are facing economic hardships due to the pandemic.

“As a third-year Dental Hygiene student, the Walk for a Smile fundraiser has always been a highlight for the program,” adds Kathrine Robinson of Lucknow, Ontario, near Kincardine. “This year, with much collaboration and teamwork during the COVID-19 pandemic, we were able to raise money for the Sudbury Food Bank and the Cambrian Student Food Bank. Nutrition plays a huge role in oral health. Providing food to those in need at such a difficult time has been a blessing to us students and we are grateful to give back!”

Students in Cambrian’s Dental programs have been raising funds through Walk For A Smile for the past 18 years.
