SUDBURY – Cambrian College broke from tradition and went on-line today to honour its graduating class of 2020.
Cambrian’s Virtual Celebration of our Graduates was broadcast live from the campus and carried on the college’s website and Facebook page. Hundreds of Cambrian students, their family and friends, faculty, and staff watched the event live and on Zoom.
“One of my favourite parts of my job is celebrating graduation with our students,” says Cambrian College President, Bill Best. “There was no way this year was going to be any different. 2020 has meant a lot of pivoting, adapting, and overcoming of unprecedented challenges. It was an unconventional finish to a school year, but we were determined to make sure our graduates got the send-off and celebration they’ve worked so hard for. We’re very proud of them.”
Cambrian’s Virtual Celebration of our Graduates included a college-wide Zoom viewing party, photos of how students were celebrating at home, plus congratulatory messages from college faculty and staff.
The event featured speeches from Bill Best, Cambrian Student Council President MC Guillemette and Alumni Speaker Maureen McLelland, a graduate of the Nursing Program (1986) and Vice-President of Cancer Care and Social Accountability at Health Sciences North.
“Class of 2020, you’ll go down in history!” said MC Guillemette. “You’ll be remembered as the students who persevered, remained determined, and kept their eyes on the prize. Hold on to the hope of a bright future, be the change you want to see in the world and create as many positive ripple effects as you possibly can.”
“Take pride in what you have learned at Cambrian,” added Alumni speaker Maureen McLelland, “but do not rest on these laurels. Commit to life-long learning and putting your knowledge to work. You’ll be brilliant.”
As always, students were honoured with awards for academic achievement:
- President’s Silver Award – Alanna Pullen, Hornpayne, Medical Radiation Technology
- President’s Gold Award – Pierre Leduc, Hearst, Electrical Engineering Technology
- Governor General’s Academic Medal - Jianing Yang, originally from China, now living in Greater Sudbury, Civil Engineering Technician
This year’s Cambrian graduates will also be invited to the next available, in-person convocation ceremony.
