SUDBURY – Cambrian College has a new manager for its new Centre for Smart Mining (CSM).
Steve Gravel has been named the inaugural manager of the CSM, which is located within the College’s Applied Research department.
Gravel is no stranger to applied research at Cambrian College. He spent four years as an Industrial Applied Research Developer at the college, before moving on to the position of Business Development Manager with a focus on mining research for Ontario Centres of Excellence.
“I’m excited to be back here at Cambrian to lead the Centre for Smart Mining,” says Gravel. “Cambrian College is already a national leader in mining-related applied research. Our goal moving forward is to become a world-leading knowledge warehouse and catalyst for technology trends and innovations in mining.”
With more than a decade of experience in various roles in applied research, Gravel brings to Cambrian his valuable insight, perspective and enthusiasm.
“We are ecstatic to have Steve rejoin the Applied Research team at Cambrian,” says Mike Commito, Cambrian’s Director of Applied Research. “Steve has worked closely with some of Ontario’s fastest growing cutting-edge technology companies. He is the perfect person to lead our Centre for Smart Mining, and keep Cambrian ahead of the curve in the ever-changing technology trends within the mining industry.”
The Centre for Smart Mining is the name of Cambrian’s new Technology Access Centre (TAC). Cambrian received its TAC designation in June from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, along with operational funding of $1.75 million over five years. Cambrian’s Centre for Smart Mining is one of only two such TACs in Canada to focus on mining-related research.
