Team Sudbury gets ready to compete at the 2019 Skills Ontario event, May 6-9, in Mississauga. Team Sudbury is comprised of students from Cambrian College, the Rainbow District School Board, and the Sudbury Catholic District School Board.

SUDBURY – It’s not just playoff season for professional athletes. High school and college students in

Sudbury are gearing up for their championship run at Skills Ontario.

For the second year in a row, Cambrian College, Rainbow District School Board, and Sudbury Catholic District School Board are joining together to form Team Sudbury at the annual Skills Ontario competition, May 6-8 in Mississauga. Skills Ontario is the largest event of its kind in Canada.

More than 50 students make up Team Sudbury, and will be competing in a variety of categories, covering a wide range of skilled trades and vocations. Skills Ontario provides students with a unique opportunity to compete against the best students in their disciplines from across Ontario, and showcase their skills in front of industry professionals.

“We look forward to Skills Ontario every year,” says Renee Scott, Cambrian’s Director of Student Success and Recruitment and Cambrian’s lead organizer for Team Sudbury. “Last year we took home 10 medals and I think this year, with the team we have, we should expect an even better level of success. This competition really does demonstrate how well all of these students are taught and the amazing skills they possess.”

Team Sudbury’s debut at last year’s Skills Ontario competition was a shining success, with team members earning 4 gold medals, 2 silver medals, and 4 bronze medals.

“Events in the skilled trades give students an opportunity to problem-solve, think creatively, and explore career opportunities at an early age,” says Dana Kinsella, Specialist High Skills Major and Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program Coordinator for Rainbow District School Board. “Reaching minds through innovative and challenging learning experiences, and touching hearts by engaging students in activities that fuel their passion supports student success.”

“We are very proud of the students participating in this year’s Skills Ontario Competition,” adds Joanne Bénard, Director of Education of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. “At Sudbury Catholic, we promote innovation as a system and make it a priority to offer hands-on learning opportunities such as this one for students at each of our 4 secondary schools. Our students work year-round improving their skills and strengthening their abilities and we can’t wait to see what they accomplish. We would like to thank their dedicated and inspiring educators for supporting them throughout the learning process!”

Winners from this year’s Skills Ontario have the opportunity to move on to the Skills Canada competition, May 28-29 in Halifax.

Team Sudbury would also like to thank its supporters for this year’s Skills Ontario competition: IHSA, NetSpectrum.ca and Schneider Electric.
