SUDBURY – Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting students from Cambrian College will be putting smiles on plenty of faces, thanks to their annual Walk for A Smile annual fundraiser last week.
They raised $4687.00 for community oral health.
"The Walk for A Smile fundraising event emphasized the importance and value, that by coming together as a Dental Health Program, we can contribute to the overall improvement of oral healthcare needs within the community; one step, one donation, and one smile at a time,” says Justis-Lee Cooper, a third-year student in Cambrian’s Dental Hygiene program.
Proceeds from Walk for A Smile will be used to promote dental health to people in need in the community, by providing supplies through Cambrian’s community oral health initiatives. Supplies include toothbrushes, toothpaste and other oral hygiene products and devices.
“Our students did such an amazing job once again this year,” says Nancy Rose, Community Lead Professor in Cambrian’s Dental Hygiene program. “This year’s theme was ‘Oral Health for Total Health’ and I was so proud to see their passion for promoting such an important topic throughout our community.”
Walk for A Smile and the public dental clinics at Cambrian College also help prepare graduates for their careers, by giving them first-hand interaction with clients.
Throughout April, students will be working in the college’s community Dental Clinic, offering free dental services for children, 18 years old and under. Services provided by Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting students, under the supervision of licensed dentists and registered dental hygienists, include:
- Dental examinations
- Teeth cleaning
- Fluoride treatments
- Oral hygiene instruction
- Athletic mouth guards
- Pit and fissure sealants
- Nutritional counselling
The Dental Clinic is located at Cambrian’s main campus on Barrydowne Road. Appointments can be made through April and May. To book an appointment, call (705) 524-7366 or e-mail email@example.com.
