SUDBURY – Cambrian College is pleased to welcome Dr. Paula Gouveia as the new Vice-President Academic (VPA). Dr. Gouveia joins Cambrian from Humber College in Toronto, where she has served as Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences since 2009.

“We are very proud and fortunate to have Dr. Gouveia as part of the Cambrian family,” says Cambrian’s President Bill Best. “With more than two decades of experience, and with her leadership, wisdom and guidance, Cambrian is in for a strong and robust future as we move forward as an academic leader and the go-to destination for students in Northern Ontario.”

Fluent in four languages, Dr. Gouveia began her postsecondary career as a professor in Seneca College’s School of General Education, followed by roles as Program Coordinator and then Chair, School of English and Liberal Studies.  She completed her PhD at the University of Toronto in 2013 and TESL Canada Certification in 2014.

During her time at Humber, Dr. Gouveia was the recipient of a number of innovation awards, and was recently recognized with the OCASA Distinguished Administrator Award for her contributions to the Ontario college system.

“I am very excited to be part of the dynamic leadership team at Cambrian,” says Dr. Gouveia. “I’m looking forward to being part of the change and growth that Cambrian is experiencing, and working with faculty and staff to ensure that we are a college of choice for students. On a personal note, I am also excited by all that Greater Sudbury has to offer. The culture, the outdoors, all the lakes and especially the people just exemplify what an amazing community this is to live and work.”

Dr. Gouveia replaces Jean Brown, who retired after a stellar career spanning more than 30 years at Cambrian, as a teacher, program coordinator, dean, and senior executive.

“We want to thank Jean for her exemplary career at Cambrian College,” adds President Bill Best. “She has the heart of a teacher and a passion for students and excellence. She has truly shaped our evolution over the years, and we wish her all the best in this new chapter in her life.”

Cambrian College is northern Ontario’s largest college, with more than 5,000 full-time students from over 30 countries, and more than 70 programs to choose from.

It is also one of Canada’s leading mid-sized colleges for applied research activity.
