SUDBURY – Cambrian College is rolling out the burgundy carpet for new and returning students.
International students have begun arriving in the city, and starting today, 600 students from across Ontario and around the world will call Cambrian College’s residence home for another school year. To ease this transition and ensure every student makes the most of their Cambrian experience, the College has a full slate of activities planned, beginning with this week’s international student orientation, Move-In Weekend, and Orientation Week, following Labour Day.
“Move-In Weekend is an important and exciting time at Cambrian College, and it’s really a life-changing moment for our students, especially first-year and international students,” says Courtney Rivard, Cambrian’s Special Events Administrative Assistant. “We try to make it fun and easy, with a team of about 70 student ambassadors who are helping their fellow students get settled.”
One of those student ambassadors is Nicole Vizza, a third-year student in Cambrian’s Public Relations program. “Move-In Weekend is a great opportunity for new students to meet their peers. We’re here to make them feel like they are part of the Cambrian family. I love being that familiar face to help them with advice and information about the campus and city of Sudbury.”
A number of events are planned for international student orientation, Move-In Weekend and Orientation Week. They include BBQ lunches, a meet and greet for students, faculty, and employees, city bus tours, information sessions for parents, the Cambrian Chase on-campus scavenger hunt, a carnival, a drum circle, and indigenous teachings in the Sacred Fire Arbour. Orientation Week wraps up Saturday, September 8th with a pair of varsity games featuring the Golden Shield Men’s and Women’s soccer teams, followed by fireworks.
“We’re looking forward to one of our biggest September launches ever, “says Cambrian President Bill Best. “Our overall student numbers are growing, and our student population is more diverse than ever before, with students from every province and over thirty countries. Our students, faculty, and staff bring so much energy and enthusiasm to our campus and our city. We’re looking forward to a great year.”
