Cambrian College Golden Shield Recruits 20 New Athletes

SUDBURY – There will be plenty of new faces in the line-up for the Cambrian College Golden Shield in 2018-19. Cambrian’s Athletics Department is pleased to announce 20 new athletes have signed on to suit up for the Golden Shield – 7 in women’s volleyball, 3 in men’s volleyball, 5 in men’s soccer, 4 in women’s soccer, and 1 in women’s cross-country running.

Twelve of the Golden Shield’s newest players are from the Greater Sudbury area, with eight players coming to Sudbury from across the province, including Sault Ste. Marie, Garden River First Nation, Thunder Bay, New Liskeard, Muskoka, Burlington, Acton, and Guelph.

“With new additions of speed, strength, discipline and skill from across the province, Cambrian is set to make its mark on the varsity sports landscape,” says Tim Yu, Manager of Athletics at Cambrian College.  “It’s only June and already we’re getting excited to hit the courts, track, pitch and everywhere else to represent Cambrian College.”

The Golden Shield men’s and women’s soccer teams begin their season with home games September 8 and 9 against Humber and Sheridan. The cross-country season begins September 15 with the Fanshawe College Invitational in London, Ontario. The Golden Shield men’s and women’s volleyball squads begin their seasons on the road, September 29 and 30 at Fanshawe.

This year, Cambrian College is hosting the women’s provincial volleyball championships, February 22-24.

The Golden Shield men’s and women’s soccer teams are looking to add quality players to their squads for the upcoming fall season. Interested players should contact Tim Yu, Manager of Athletics, tim.yu@cambriancollege.ca for more information. Tryouts begin Tuesday, August 21.

Women’s Volleyball:


RECRUIT: Alison LaBrash
Hometown: Capreol
High School:  Confederation Secondary School
Sport: Women’s Volleyball
Position: Left side
Program: Pre-Health Sciences
Background Information: Alison was a key member of the Confederation Chargers squad that won the Division 1 City Championship this past year. A natural leader, Alison is the recipient of the Kin Club Valley East Award in 2018 and Metro Leadership Award in 2016.

RECRUIT: Erica Scott Thomas
Hometown: Guelph
High School: Centennial Collegiate Vocational Institute
Position: Right side
Program: Animation
Why did you choose Cambrian: Erica chose Cambrian after her high school art teacher recommended the Animation program.  After a campus visit, Erica knew she had found the school she loved.
Background Information: Erica is a former member of the Guelph Grizzlies and the Guelph Junior Gryphons. She is a recipient of a 2016 Ontario Volleyball Association Award of Excellence.

RECRUIT: Maggie Little
Hometown: New Liskeard
High School: Temiskaming District Secondary School
Position: Middle
Program: Pre-Health Sciences
Why did you choose Cambrian: Cambrian has the program Maggie wants and she can continue to play volleyball.
Background Information: Maggie was an MVP this past season.

RECRUIT: Kayla Murray
Hometown: Whitefish
High School: Lockerby Composite School
Position: Left side
Program: Bachelors of Science in Nursing
Why did you choose Cambrian: Kayla chose Cambrian for its well-respected Nursing program, and she can continue to play volleyball.
Background Information:  Kayla played for the Northern Chill Volleyball Club for 6 years and won the Health and Wellness SHSM award.

RECRUIT: Destinee Pine-Hull
Hometown: Sault St. Marie and Garden River First Nation
High School: St. Mary’s College
Position: Middle
Program: Pre-Health Sciences
Why did you choose Cambrian: Destinee’s journey to Cambrian College began when she was in Grade 9, and saw the Golden Shield women’s volleyball team play. It became her favourite team, and after researching the school and the Pre-Health Sciences Program, Destinee knew Cambrian would be where she would attend.
Background Information: During her time with the St. Mary’s College girl’s volleyball team, Destinee earned Rookie of the Year Award and was named Team Captain by Grade 10. In her senior years, she added the title of MVP and was twice nominated for the city-wide Tenaris Award for best female volleyball player.

RECRUIT: Amanda Lawson
Hometown: Sudbury
High School: Lasalle Secondary School
Position: Libero
Program: Paramedic
Why did you choose Cambrian: Amanda chose Cambrian because it is close to home and feels Cambrian has the best Paramedic program.

RECRUIT: Britney Chevrier
Hometown: Capreol
High School: Confederation Secondary School
Position: Middle
Program: Business Fundamentals
Why did you choose Cambrian: Cambrian is close to home.
Background Information: Britney was a member of the Confederation Chargers girl’s volleyball team that won the city championship in 2016-17, a team that featured another new Golden Shield, Alison LaBrash. Britney also played for the Northern Chill Volleyball Club in Sudbury.

 

Women’s Soccer


RECRUIT: Taylor Bellini
Hometown: Sault St. Marie
High School: St. Basil Secondary School
Post-Secondary: Algoma University, Sault Ste. Marie
Position: Striker
Program: Human Resources Graduate Certificate
Why did you choose Cambrian: Taylor chose Cambrian because it is just the right size, close to home, has her program of interest, and allows her to continue to play soccer.
Background Information: Taylor was a member of the Algoma University Women’s soccer team.

RECRUIT: Elizabeth Chisholm
Hometown: Burlington
High School: Assumption Catholic Secondary School
Position: Striker
Program: Pre-Service Fire Fighter Education and Training
Why did you choose Cambrian: Elizabeth feels that Cambrian is the right college for her.
Background information: Elizabeth was a member of the Burlington Bayhawks U15 squad that won the Premier Peel Halton Cup in 2015.

RECRUIT: Laura Fratin
Hometown: Sudbury
High School: Lasalle Secondary School
Position: Midfield/Striker
Program: Pre-Health Sciences
Why did you choose Cambrian: Laura chose Cambrian because it is close to home, and has great introductory programs that will help her choose her career path. Background information: Laura played with the GSSC U21 women’s team which competes in the Ontario Women’s Soccer League.

RECRUIT: Jessie Marleen Hayward
Hometown: Acton
High School: Acton District High School
Position: Outside Midfielder
Program: Paramedic
Why did you choose Cambrian: Jessie chose Cambrian after a team of recruiters visited her high school while she was in Grade 10. She loves the size and layout of Cambrian’s campus and the friendliness of its people.

 

Women’s Cross Country


RECRUIT: Sydney Tarini
Hometown: Sudbury
High School: Lo-Ellen Secondary School
Sport: Cross Country
Program: Pre-Health Sciences
Background Information: Sydney has been a competitive cross-country runner since Grade 7 and is a member of Track North. She is also a competitive cross-country skier and track and field athlete.

RECRUIT: Julien Giroux
Hometown: Sudbury
High School: Lasalle Secondary School
Position: Libero
Program: Police Foundations
Background Information: Julien was a member of the Lasalle Secondary School boy’s volleyball team that won back-to-back city and Northern Ontario (NOSSA) championships.

RECRUIT: Dylan Terris
Hometown: Sudbury
High School: Lasalle Secondary School
Position: Left side
Program: Pre-Service Firefighting and Education Training
Background Information: Dylan was a standout player for his high school team and helped lead Lasalle to back-to-back city and NOSSA championships, along with Julien Giroux, another new member of the Golden Shield.

RECRUIT: Alex Theriault
Hometown: Hanmer
High School: Ecole secondaire catholique l’Horizon
Position: Right side
Program: Millwright Program
Background Information: Alex was a key member of the l’Horizon squad which placed second at both the city and NOSSA championships.

 

Men’s Soccer


RECRUIT: Jesse Johnson
Hometown: Sudbury
High School: Lockerby Composite School
Position: Striker
Program: Physical Fitness Management
Background Information: Jesse was a crucial asset to the Greater Sudbury Soccer Club (GSSC) U21 team and one of the leading scorer’s in Sudbury Men’s League play.

RECRUIT: Kiel Cress
Hometown: Lively
High School: Lively District Secondary School
Position: Goal Keeper
Program: Social Service Worker
Background Information: Kiel is currently playing for the GSSC U21 team.

RECRUIT: Dyk Taw
Hometown: Thunder Bay
High School: Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate & Vocational Institute
Position: Midfielder
Program: General Studies
Background Information: Dyk played for the Thunder Bay Express rep team for a number of years and led his high school team to the OFSSA AAA finals in his graduating year.

RECRUIT: Kevin Martin Rojas
Hometown: Sudbury
High School: Lockerby Composite Secondary School
Program: Business
Background Information: Originally from Cuba and now living in Sudbury, Kevin is currently playing for the GSSC U21 team.

RECRUIT: Noah Chamberland
Hometown: Muskoka
Position: Defender/Midfielder
Program: Pre-Service Fire Fighter Education and Training
Background Information: Noah has played competitive for teams in Orangeville and Caledon.
