Members of Team Sudbury prepare for the Skills Ontario competition May 7-9 in Toronto.

SUDBURY – It will be hard not to notice the Nickel City at the annual Skills Ontario competition next week in Toronto.

Cambrian College, the Rainbow District School Board, and the Sudbury Catholic Schools (English) are joining forces to create Team Sudbury for the event.

Skills Ontario is Canada's largest skilled trade and technology competition and offers a unique opportunity for top students to demonstrate that they are the best of the best in their fields. Winners receive Gold, Silver or Bronze medals and the opportunity to compete at the Skills Canada National Competition. This year’s Skills Ontario competition is being held May 7-9th at the Congress Centre in Toronto.

Cambrian is sending 24 students to Skills Ontario, with 28 students joining Team Sudbury from Rainbow Schools and 5 students joining from Sudbury Catholic Schools.

“Skills Ontario is a great way to showcase the high level of skill demonstrated by our local college and high school students, and it’s a real tribute to how well they are taught, at Cambrian College and in the high schools,” says Renee Scott, Cambrian’s Director of Student Success and Recruitment and Cambrian’s lead organizer for Team Sudbury. “We’re combining with the local high schools this year because we really want to make a statement to the rest of the province that we value skilled trades and we’re very good at them.”

Since 2005, Cambrian College students have won more than 50 medals at Skills Ontario and Skills Canada competitions.

Cambrian College would like to thank all the students, faculty, and support staff who have contributed to the success at Skills Ontario and Skills Canada.

Cambrian College would also like to thank its sponsors for this year’s Skills Ontario competition: Lopes Mechanical, Snap On Tools, Mitutoyo, Toromont Cat, Nortrax John Deere, Toronto Bobcat, Strongco Volvo.
