SUDBURY – Last week, Dental Hygiene and Dental Assistant students at Cambrian College hit the streets to raise awareness and money for oral health.
At this year’s Walk For A Smile event, students raised $6,000 for oral health services and supplies provided to people in need, through the public dental clinics offered at Cambrian. These supplies and services include toothbrushes, toothpaste, oral health devices, and dental instruments for screening and cleaning.
“I always say that the best thing you can wear is a smile,” says Elysha Devoni, a 3rd year Dental Hygiene student. “Oral health promotion and access is so integral to everyone’s overall physical and mental health. I want to thank those who continue to support this amazing initiative. Your gifts are making a significant difference in the lives of so many!”
Walk For A Smile and the public dental clinics at Cambrian College also help prepare graduates for their careers, by giving them first-hand interaction with clients.
“I really enjoyed the opportunity to develop relationships with those in the community,” adds Nidhi Bhudak, a 3rd-year Dental Hygiene student. “I hold a Bachelor of Dental Surgery in my home country of India and entered this field to help create happier smiles. In my three years with Cambrian, I have had the opportunity to provide services to those in need through our Dental Clinic. I’ve seen the impact of this initiative first hand, and I am very proud to have been involved.”
Walk For A Smile is an annual event that involves both students and faculty in Cambrian’s Dental Hygiene and Dental Assistant programs.
“I am incredibly proud of the work our students have done to support this initiative,” says Cambrian Professor, Nancy Rose. “We are training students to not only succeed in the field, but to become community minded individuals in the process. Through the coordination and execution of this fundraising event students are not only supporting a great cause but are developing a variety of skills required in their field such as teamwork, collaboration, leadership, advocacy, and communications.”
The Cambrian College Dental Clinic is continuing to offer services to the community in the month of May. Dental exams, teeth cleaning, x-rays, and other services will be provided by dental students for a registration fee of $25 per person or $35 per family.
