SUDBURY – Students graduating this year from the Graphic Design Program at Cambrian College want their final project to have extra-special meaning. So, they’ve turned it into a fundraiser for children with cancer.
The students are holding an exhibition of their work called Hearts of Oak, Thursday, April 19, at Cambrian’s Open Studio in downtown Sudbury. It will be a charity gala with proceeds going to Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer (NOFCC).
“During our class discussions last September, I asked my students, ‘How will the Class of 2018 be remembered?’ And they came up with this,” says Ron Beltrame, a Professor in Cambrian’s School of Creative Arts and Design. “To see the students choose to make their final exhibit a fundraiser is one of the most gratifying moments I could ever have as a teacher. We’re not just graduating terrific designers; we graduating excellent, community-minded people. I’m so proud of them.”
For graduating student Michela Langois, turning her final exhibit into a charity event was a natural choice. “Because of my previous work with the Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer, I had first-hand experience with how the charity is changing the lives of families throughout the province. With that, I brought up the idea that we should donate our grad show to the NOFCC, and show how graphic design can make a difference.”
The Graphic Design Class of 2018 has been raising money all year for NOFCC. Approximately $5,500 have been raised so far, with a target of $7,000.
Raphy Falardeau is a member of this year’s graduating class. The gala will be a great way to cap off her time at Cambrian College, in her program of choice.
“I've always said that if I wasn't in art and design, I wouldn't be happy,” says Falardeau. “I took Graphic Design because I wanted to do everything – illustrate, design, and write. Cambrian allowed me to take a variety of classes and now I am exploding with ideas for what to do next. I've never felt more sure of myself. This is where I was meant to be.”
The Hearts of Oak charity gala begins at 6:30 p.m. and features a cash bar and light refreshments. For more information about the gala, visit www.ccgraphicdesign.ca/heartsofoak.
The Open Studio is located at 93 Cedar Street in downtown Sudbury. It is a space dedicated to showcasing artistic work from students and faculty in the Animation, Art and Design Fundamentals and Graphic Design programs.
