SUDBURY – A national calibre cross-country runner and the most prolific scorer in college women’s soccer history were among the winners at this year’s Cambrian College Golden Shield Athletics Banquet.

Mary Strain was named Cambrian’s Female Athlete of the Year. The cross-country runner won the silver medal at this year’s provincial championships, and placed seventh at the national level. Strain was also named an All-Ontarian and All-Canadian.

Nicholas Walker, captain of the men’s soccer team, was chosen as Cambrian’s Male Athlete of the Year. Walker was also selected Team MVP and ranked ninth in the OCAA in penalty kicks.

Women’s soccer player Tiffany Johnson received a Special Recognition Award. Johnson completed her career at Cambrian this season, holding the OCAA records for the most goals in a single season (28) and most goals (83).

A new award debuted at this year’s banquet. The #ShieldCares Legacy Award was given to Mitchell Reid of the men’s volleyball team. The award recognizes a full-time student who volunteers time with the Cambrian Athletic Association and goes above and beyond to enhance the college experience for other students. This season, Reid helped with residence move-in weekend, led initiatives during Movember (prostate cancer awareness month) and was a strong advocate for Bell Let’s Talk Day.

“I want to congratulate all our Golden Shield varsity athletes and award recipients,” says Alanna LaHay, a former Golden Shield badminton player and outgoing President of the Cambrian Athletics Association, who created the #ShieldCares Legacy Award. “It was an honour to play for the Golden Shield and serve our athletes during my time as President.  I am especially pleased we now have the #ShieldCares Legacy Award, to honour an athlete who volunteers his or her time. I believe that athletics is about more than sport and competition. It’s about preparing people to be good citizens, who give back to the community.”

Cambrian College congratulates all its varsity athletes, coaches, and their supporters.
