Six third-year Cambrian College Graphic Design students will be earning credits and pay cheques at the same time, thanks to a partnership with four local businesses that will enable students to provide innovative digital and design solutions to support business development.
The project is funded by the Ontario Centres for Excellence (OCE) Voucher for E-Business and Technology Adoption (VEBTA) program and facilitated by Cambrian College’s applied research arm, Cambrian Innovates.
Guided by Graphic Design professors Sean Grant and Ron Beltrame, students will either work directly with clients or be embedded as part of the design team of a local business or organization. The students will aid the businesses in developing stronger online tools or social media assets to support their goals. “The opportunity to work directly with a client, or as part of a design team are valuable experiences in a designer's education,” said Grant. “The project offers students the opportunity to expand their critical thinking, design, project management and interpersonal skills in a paid work environment.”
Ontario Centres for Excellence funded the VEBTA program at Cambrian College for four years. The partnership continues to build momentum, expanding opportunities for student participants and benefiting local business.
“The VEBTA program offers substantive benefits to students seeking skills development and workplace experience opportunities while providing affordable access to business development support for Northern businesses and organizations,” said Stephen Gravel, Business Development Manager, OCE.
Since 2013, 20 local businesses have taken advantage of the program. Past clients include Sizzle Mongolian Grill, Quinta Essentia, Classic Finds, and Stack Brewery.
The project is made possible by $20,000 in funding from OCE’s VEBTA program, and a $5,000 investment from local businesses and organizations including the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, Fuel Multimedia, Studio 123 and Design de Plume.
