What to Expect for your First Appointment

Learn More About Your First Appointment

The Glenn Crombie Centre for Accessibility, Counselling and Wellness (GCC) provides a range of services aimed to empower students in meeting their wellness goals, accommodation and disability-related needs, and creating a more accessible campus community. Our team of professional advisorscounsellors, and staff offer services such as accommodation planning, brief, solution-focused psychotherapy, health and wellness education, group counselling and workshops, wellness initiatives, assistive technology training, and learning strategy training. 

Your First Appointment – Accessibility  

Students who are accessing The GCC, Accessibility services for the first time are encouraged to book an Accessibility Intake appointment where you will have the opportunity to meet with an Accessibility Advisor to discuss your goals, strengths, and needs. Your advisor will work with you to determine appropriate classroom and testing accommodations. During your intake session, you should be ready to: 

  • Discuss the impact of your disability as it relates to your academics in order to develop an accommodation plan 
  • Supply documentation verifying a documented disability Learn More
  • Learn important procedures for making use of your accommodations 
  • Discuss other appropriate supports and services including  
  • Bursary and grant information (if relevant) 
  • Learning strategies you can use to enhance your academic success 
  • Assistive technology supports

Your First Appointment – Counselling

Students who are accessing The GCC, Counselling services for the first time are encouraged to book a counselling session where you will have the opportunity to meet with a counsellor to discuss your goals and needs. During your intake session, you may discuss many things which could include: 

  • Identifying strategies you can use to enhance and maintain your wellness, including strategies that have worked well for you in the past; 
  • Referral to online tools and resources that can provide same-day supports if you experience elevated distress; 
  • Participation in group counselling and/or various workshops; 
  • Referral to campus partners who can assist you; 
  • Referral to community organizations and services that can provide specialized treatment and services in relation to your mental health and disability needs.
