Privacy and Confidentiality

Confidentiality Statement

The information you disclose to The Glenn Crombie Centre for Accessibility, Counselling and Wellness is confidential. The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, 1990 and The Personal Health Information Protection Act, 2004, regard the student record as a unique, private document to which access is strictly controlled and governed essentially by the student’s wishes and the College’s responsibility.

The Glenn Crombie Centre for Accessibility, Counselling and Wellness will not share your personal information with a third party, including your parents, without your consent, except in certain emergency situations.

Glenn Crombie Centre staff members may consult within the department, with other departments within Cambrian College, as well as with experts in the field for the purpose of arranging your academic accommodations and/or related services. Only that information which is necessary for the arrangement of your academic accommodations and/or related services will be obtained/disclosed.

Limits to confidentiality

There are several exceptions and limits to confidentiality that you need to be aware of. They are:

  1. Records are maintained in our databases and are accessible to authorized Glenn Crombie Centre Staff members.
  2. When any type of child abuse or neglect is disclosed or suspected or risk of child abuse or neglect likely occurring is disclosed or suspected, we are bound by law to report it to the Children’s Aid Society.
  3. Disclosure related to risk if it is believed, on reasonable grounds, that the disclosure is necessary to eliminate or reduce a significant risk of serious bodily harm to self, a person or group of persons.
  4. In the course of litigation, student information may be required by a summons, subpoena or a court order to disclose personal information and records.
  5. For purposes of any legally required file audits and reports (e.g., quality assurance reviews, Ministry audits, OSAP bursaries obtained, W.S.I.B. summary reports) your file may be reviewed.
  6. Data is collected in an aggregate form. Such as # of students, types of accommodations received, types of disabilities etc. Identifiable information is not reported.
  7. Any recordings on College property are protected by privacy policies and may NOT be shared without expressed written consent.

Storage and Disposal of your Records

Your record will be kept for 10 years after the date of your last interaction with the Glenn Crombie Centre for Accessibility, Counselling and Wellness. After this time, your record will be securely destroyed.
