Cambrian College’s Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting students are working to improve oral health awareness and outcomes in Greater Sudbury through their annual Walk for a Smile on Friday, April 7 from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. starting at Cambrian’s Barrydowne campus.
The student-led initiative raises funds that will go towards the purchase of toothpaste, toothbrushes, oral hygiene aids, and supplies for the less advantaged. Local agencies may also receive cash donations that can be put toward dental services for those in need.
As part of their programs, students complete placements and conduct other oral health promotion projects in a variety of community settings. These experiences provide them with a better appreciation of the health issues that can arise when there is a lack of regular preventive oral care and they have a positive effect on the students’ sense of social responsibility and advocacy.
Students are collecting donations of:
- Oral health products (e.g. toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss)
- Oral examination products (e.g. non-latex examination gloves and masks)
- Door prizes
- Bottled water or juice (for event participants)
Students are collecting donations from the community using pledge forms. Contributions can also be made at the Dental Clinic at Cambrian College’s Barrydowne campus in room 2238, or online through the Cambrian College Foundation at: http://cfou.convio.net/WalkforSmile2017.
