Cambrian College’s Accounting program coordinator and professor, Kayla Levesque, is honoured to be recognized for her exceptional volunteer achievements through the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers.

I feel grateful and delighted to join such a distinguished group of Canadians who have been honoured in this way,” Levesque said. “It was completely unexpected, and I have to thank all of my former and present students for making it possible.

Levesque isn’t sure who nominated her for the award, but the impact of her volunteerism is obvious to the people she’s helped, and to those who have been inspired to join her in her efforts. As a Chartered Professional Accountant and a professor at Cambrian College, she has, for the past six years, built upon a volunteer-based income tax filing program that helps low-income students. During that time, she has more than doubled the number of students served.

Under Levesque’s supervision, Accounting students complete 200 to 250 tax returns on behalf of low-income students over the course of two nights. The student volunteers do it for the professional experience but also because they’re inspired to help others.

Levesque and her students have also assisted with preparing tax returns for low-income seniors, new Canadians, and others by request. She also leads and participates in fundraisers on- and off-campus whenever she can.

“When I was student at Cambrian, many people helped me, and I always wanted to give back,” Levesque explained. “As a professor, I’ve found a way to give back to the community and to inspire students to do the same. I feel very proud that many of my former students continue volunteering after graduation, so that’s another win.”

The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers recognizes the exceptional volunteer achievements of Canadians from across the country in a wide range of fields. It is an official Canadian honour and the only one for volunteerism given by the Governor General of Canada.
