IT Update

Quick Facts

Cambrian College’s information systems are back up and running. We thank our students, faculty and staff for their ongoing patience and understanding.

NEW (May 7):

  • All labs and classrooms originally scheduled for use by students and faculty this term have been deemed safe to use.
  • Access has been restored to the L, O, P, S, and W drives, as well as the MACSHARE.

Student grades were released on Friday, May 5 at approximately 6:30 p.m. This was ahead of the revised deadline of Saturday at noon. This is good news, however, some users at the College are still experiencing delays sending and receiving email and voicemail messages. The College’s IT team is working to resolve issues with communication systems and they are aiming to restore access to shared drives in the coming days.

On May 5, the College’s IT team brought 24 classrooms back online to support teaching and learning. On May 4, faculty and staff gained access to drives in a controlled lab environment.

Full details for students, faculty and staff are below.

USBs/External Drives/Personal Devices

  • If you have connected any USBs or other external drives (including storage drives on personal devices such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones) to a College computer, have the device(s) tested by the IT Helpdesk in room 2165 before using again on College and/or personal computers because these devices may transfer the virus.

Background

  • Cambrian’s systems were compromised by a computer virus on the afternoon of April 27. The virus was a form of ransomware that encrypts files.
  • The College engaged the support of a cyber-security firm, who, along with IT staff, worked diligently to assess the impact of the virus and to restore the affected systems.
  • In order to minimize the impact on students, the College extended deadlines in order to meet end of semester requirements.
  • Release of final grades to students was rescheduled to noon on Saturday, May 6. In addition, registration for the spring semester was rescheduled and will open on Sunday, May 7, at 10 a.m.
  • The majority of Cambrian’s systems are operational. At this time, there is no indication that personal information has been accessed.
  • We will continue to provide updates on a regular basis.
