Professors, Police Foundations (Winter Semester – January 2018)

Position Summary

Cambrian College’s School of Justice, Community Services, and General Studies requires part-time Professors to teach in the Police Foundations program from January 2018 to April 2018.

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Academic Manager, the Professors will teach within the following courses:

  • Traffic Management I and II (PFP4070) – Students will develop the knowledge, skills, and ability to locate and apply sections of the Provincial Traffic Law. They will practice locating topics in the Acts and Regulations, will master the definitions required to interpret traffic laws, and will apply the law concerning Police Authorities, drivers’ licenses, permits, and rules of the road. Students will develop and practice interpersonal strategies and procedures for dealing with motor vehicle stops. Students will develop the knowledge, skills, and ability needed to apply criminal code operating offences to real-life scenarios. Students will also develop and employ strategies and procedures for managing an accident scene.

 

  • Provincial Offences (PFP4010) – Students will study Provincial Statutes commonly encountered by police and private security. Statutes chosen for study include the Provincial Offences Act, Police Services Act, Liquor Licence Act, Trespass to Property Act, Safe Streets Act, Coroner’s Act, Mental Health Act, and the Residential Tenancies Act. Focus will be on examining the more common offences and any specific authorities in each piece of legislation. Students will also research other statutes to identify offences and authorities. Students will learn how to complete a Certificate of Offence and make notes for court purposes using Part 1 Procedures.

Qualifications

Required

  • Postsecondary degree preferably in the field of Law and Justice.
  • Five years of experience in policing or security.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and superior oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to be an effective role model in the classroom.
  • Ability to utilize creative teaching approaches as well as current and emerging teaching and learning strategies to enhance student progress.
  • Possess good organizational skills and sound computer software skills.
  • Ability to function within a team environment.

Assets / Preferred

  • Master’s degree and/or a Bachelor of Education.
  • Teaching experience at the postsecondary level.

* All candidates will be required to undergo a mini-teaching simulation during the interview process.
